Tokyo, Japan Day 26: Ueno

8/7/2012

Tanabata

I was lucky to still be in Japan on 8th July. It wasn't in my initial plan and I didn't see this coming. My second festival in Japan, first was in Sapporo and to date I have no idea what festival it was. Anyway, I got to know of this festival (Tanabata) from my friends in Japan. As in when is it and where is it. I do know what Tanabata is, maybe not the details.

And do you know where did I get to know about this Tanabata Festival from? As in what it is.

Sailormoon. Yes, you read that right. Sailormoon. There was this special episode about Tanabata festival in the manga series. lol

In short, Tanabata = "celebrates the meeting of the deities Orihime and Hikoboshi. According to legend, the Milky Way separates these lovers, and they are allowed to meet only once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month of the Lunisolar Calendar" - Quote Wikipedia- which translates to 7th July, but the festival itself lasts a few days.

So I was having dinner with friends the day before and they told me bout it, and that they were planning to visit the next day. Since I had no plan then, I told them to inform me if they're going and they did.

The next day I received their message on FB and we met up in Ueno Station around noon.Even in the station, it was decorated for the festival.

Ueno Station
Took a picture of the map to help with navigation :3 We just had a rough idea where it was.

Tokyo Skytree within walking distance too.

15 minutes or less from Ueno Station. There it is!

People Mountain, People Sea!!! (translates to packed! in Cantonese/Mandarin)

There were people with Yukatas too

Food, food, food.

Dance, dance, dance.

I'm not really sure about this, but I think people write down their wishes on paper strips and hang them up.

and, horse meat x.x no, I didn't try them.

Went for a short break and had lunch.

I love them Pickled Radish! Tsumugi XDD
Back to all the happenings after lunch. Had a hard time squeezing through the mountain and the sea ><

What is that game?

Around late afternoon, we left and went to Ameya Yokocho, in short Ameyoko. It's a busy, busy market along Yamanote tracks, just below it as you can see in the picture. It's located on the other side of Ueno Station.

Again, People Mountain, People Sea ><

According to a friend, this is the place to go if you wish to stock up on Snacks and Candies.

Well, I bought a box of snacks home. Kit Kat in different flavours :DD and chocolates and candies and nuts. I wish I had taken a picture of the Snack Shop but I guess I was too concentrated on selecting Kit Kats.

Had our dinner in Akihabara that night. It was within walking distance from Ameyoko. Like 20(?) minutes away. Just follow the train track above the market.

Awesome Tempura Don!
