Seniors may need new shoes to avoid pain, prevent falls - Physician's Weekly Posted: 05 Jul 2019 07:49 AM PDT By Lisa Rapaport (Reuters Health) – Because our feet change shape as we age, shoes that fit when we were young may become uncomfortable and unsafe in our senior years, a research review suggests. Safe footwear for older adults should have a proper anatomical fit, a well-fitted toe box, a low heel height, a broad enough heel, a snug fit, and be easy to get on and off, researchers note in Maturitas. While ill-fitting shoes can cause problems at any age, the risks increase for seniors, said Dr. Selene Parekh of the North Carolina Orthopedic Clinic and Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, who wasn't involved in the review. Shoes that don't fit older adults "can mean painful toes, mid arch or foot pain, or even heel pain," Parekh said in an email. "This can have implications for stability and risk of falls, and it can also lead to sprains, fractures, and even psychological issues with chronic pain," Parekh said. "A proper fitting shoe can help alleviate any issues ranging from plantar fasciitis and heel pain, to arthritis, to bunions and hammertoes." To assess the optimal characteristics of shoes for older adults, Anton Jellema of Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands and colleagues reviewed 57 previously published studies of footwear and various health issues encountered by older people. Jellema didn't respond to requests for comment. Older adults tend to have a lower arch but increased circumference of the forefoot, ankle and instep than younger people, the study team writes. Shoes that are too narrow or too small can cause pain, but shoes that are too loose can result in lower gait speed, shorter stride length, and an irregular gait pattern, the study team notes. When older adults get fitted with new shoes tailored to match their foot length and width at the ball of their foot, their gait improves, the research review found. Wearing high heels can cause problems like heel pain and plantar calluses. While high heels aren't advised for older adults because of their potential to impair balance and stability, some women who have worn heels for years may experience pain when they switch to flats, the researchers note. When older women do wear heels, they should look for lower, broader heels that will provide more support. Soles with a broader surface area may help improve balance and stability and prevent falls, the study team notes. Rigid insoles may also help improve postural stability more than soft insoles. Older adults who use arch supports may have better balance, functional mobility, and less pain than seniors who don't, the study team writes. The review didn't identify an ideal shoe design for older adults. "The main limitation of the study is that it outlines some basic footwear features that would be possibly beneficial for an older adult population," Parekh said. "However, there is no clinical data to suggest that they are recommendations that are correct." Still, it makes sense for older adults to pay attention to how their shoes fit and feel, Parekh said. "When you look to buy the best shoes, you really need to find something that feels comfortable and stable to you," Parekh advised. "Do not fall into the trap of some of the marketing that tries to fit individuals all into one model or brand of shoe." SOURCE: https://bit.ly/30fiy2D Maturitas, online June 3, 2019. |
Photos: Zion Williamson’s Summer League Shoes Have Everyone Buzzing - The Spun Posted: 05 Jul 2019 06:03 PM PDT Zion Williamson has arrived for his debut at the NBA's Summer League and his footwear choice has the basketball community buzzing. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, who's set to make his New Orleans Pelicans debut tonight, has yet to sign a shoe contract. Industry experts have speculated that it'll be one of the biggest rookie shoe deals in history. Of course, Nike is seen by some as the favorite, as The Swoosh is the biggest basketball brand, with Williamson also attending a Nike school in Duke. However, Williamson has shown up to Summer League in something else… Pumas.
Puma is making a major push in the basketball world, signing players such as Deandre Ayton, DeMarcus Cousins and Marvin Bagley. It's possible Puma will be the company that gives Williamson the biggest offer, though it'd still come as a major shock if he signed with them.
Williamson did have one of the most-viral moments in sneaker history when he tore through his Nike shoe during the Duke-North Carolina game at Cameron Indoor Stadium this past season. New Orleans and Williamson are set to play R.J. Barrett and the Knicks in their Summer League debut this evening. Tipoff is set for 9:30 p.m. E.T. on ESPN. |
"Betsy Ross" Nike Shoes Receive $15,000 Offer on eBay as Supply Dwindles - Newsweek Posted: 05 Jul 2019 09:44 AM PDT Days after Nike announced it would not sell its "Betsy Ross" flag-themed shoe that had been intended to celebrate the 4th of July holiday, a pair of the shoes listed on eBay had received a bid of $15,000. Nike said earlier in the week that it would not sell its Air Max 1 Quick Strike Fourth of July shoe. The Wall Street Journal said the company pulled the sneaker after former NFL star Colin Kaepernick told the company it should not sell a shoe with a symbol that some consider offensive, given its ties to America's time as a nation with slavery. The flag has also been adopted by hate groups. While the company's decision sparked a cultural discussion about the significance of the flag and the history of the country, buyers rushed to purchase the shoes, and the price quickly ticked upward. A pair of the "Betsy Ross" sneakers reportedly sold for $2,500 on e-commerce website StockX after Nike announced that it would be pulling the shoe. But the price has since skyrocketed. By midday Friday, 99 people had bid on a single eBay post, which had received an offer of $15,000. "I have NEVER seen so many watchers or views, and it has to be the hottest item on eBay right now. Call it patriotism, the need to have something you have been told you can't have, or just a desire for shoe or antique collectors (these could be historical one day), they are paying amazing amounts," Isaiah Miller, the seller of the shoes, told Newsweek in an email. Miller described himself as a 21-year-old entrepreneur and said that his primary business is on eBay. He said that he had purchased the shoes from another buyer, writing "the seller was getting a LOT of harassment and threats, and so she decided to just sell them to me at a Buy It Now price." Although StockX had removed the resale of the "Betsy Ross" shoe, saying that the product "does not align with our value system," other pairs were still listed at hefty prices on eBay. One pair had received 37 bids and offers up to $5,100. Another, which had not yet received a bid, was listed at $2,500. Despite the inflated price tag on the "Betsy Ross" shoes, which had originally been expected to sell for $140, the price isn't unheard of. A pair of Nike Air Mags sold for $40,000 at the Vancouver Air Con in February. Four shoes on StockX had received bids above $15,000. A set of "Jordan 4 Retro Eminem Encore" shoes had generated a bid of $15,555, while a pair of Nike's "MAG Back to the Future" had received an offer of $45,000. |
Warren murder suspects arrested after returning to scene for shoes - Fox 2 Detroit Posted: 05 Jul 2019 08:21 PM PDT WARREN, Mich. (FOX 2) - Warren Police said three men were arrested for beating a man to death after his body was found in the middle of Mound Road. They said they were able to arrest the three men when two of them came back to the scene, looking for their shoes. Warren Police told FOX 2 a man was found in one of the southbound lanes of Mound near Chicago around 2 a.m. on July 4th. He was taken to Ascension Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. "I almost hit him in the middle of the road. He's just lying in the center of the street, blood coming out of his face," the caller said. He definitely needs an ambulance. He's breathing barely." The victim has been identified as 24-year-old Kenneth Klingler from Auburn Hills. Warren police believed it was a hit-and-run, until they saw the surveillance video. Now they were looking for the car in that video - a silver Buick - which they actually saw while they were reviewing the video. Detectives said the suspects pulled up to the gas station to look for their shoes. Police said 23-year-old Christopher Zehnpfennig, a freelance photographer for WXYZ Channel 7, is also a martial arts expert. Police said he took off his shoes during the fight with Klingler and had returned to the scene with another suspect to pick them up. "The detectives went across the street confronted them. They made admissions, they were arrested - two of them - and then the third suspect was arrested over at the home on a street here in Warren," said Warren Police Chief Bill Dwyer. Zehnpfenning, Christopher Twarowski and Nathan Domagalski have all been charged with involuntary manslaughter. Police said Klingler was down on his luck, and he met the men at a party in Troy. Warren Police said they agreed to let him stay at their house in Warren but, along the way, Klingler attacked Domagalski in the backseat. That's when Zehnphenning puled over and intervened. "They beat him to death. It's a tragedy. They beat him, three of them. I mean, he's suffering," said Dwyer. "He just had no chance. I mean, he had a fractured skull, other injuries that caused his death. It was senseless." He credited the detectives and the businesses for quickly providing surveillance video that quickly led to the alleged killers. "Within three hours , from the time we got the 911 call which was 2:07 a.m. and we had all three arrested by 4:56 a.m. So, just great work, but they came back just strictly for their shoes," Dwyer said. Klingler's mother has set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for his funeral. |
