Remember your first day of college? Who can forget the first whiff of independence as a student? College gave us the independence and freedom to start pretending to be an adult and do all the things that an adult would do, sans the label of a full-grown adult. We hung out whenever we wanted with whoever we wanted, we bunked classes, explored places and what not. Some of us even relocated to other cities for college. If you ask any first-time college goer to recall the most exciting part of moving out of their house and starting the student life, they’ll tell you that it’s the feeling of setting up their own personal space — their dorm rooms!
Be it a small dorm room, or a big apartment with roommates, that’s your happy place until you graduate. So how do you make a limited space like a dorm more personal? How do you make your space more comfortable and cozy? By adding elements that define you to it. And you can do that by decorating it your way! And we know, a college goer will definitely have a tight budget and has to decorate the dorm on a shoestring budget. Where there’s a lack of money, there’s an abundance of creativity. And with so many ideas around us, there’s no dearth of creativity, right? We’ve rounded up quite a few DIY and extremely dorm-friendly ideas that will help you decorate your dorm in a way that suits you best and within the budget. Here’s the list-
1. Use Pictures

Nothing can add more charm to your dorm than a wall full of memories and photographs. Decorate at least one of the walls with photographs and make it your space. These pictures can be your family pictures, or the ones that you click with your new friends. You can also put up pictures of your travels and other inspirations. Having happy pictures around you will make you feel positive and will give you the feeling of a home away from home.
You can put them up in a creative way by clipping them on strings or make your own collage and put it up. Or hit the nearest craft store and see if you can find cute frames or materials that can be made into a frame. The easiest way is to tape some pictures on a string and cover it with fairy light.
2. Put Up Posters Or Wall Art

If pictures aren’t your thing and you feel that pictures of your family will only make you miss them more, opt for funny posters instead. Put up posters or even wall art that defines your character best.
Use washi tape to make the outlines for the posters and make it look colourful and bright.
3. Place Small Potted Plants In The Corners
Sometimes, there’s a strange smell in the dorm (it could be of floor cleaners, paint, etc). To give your dorm a fresh and natural look, consider placing plants that require minimum maintenance. For example, the succulents — they don’t require much care. They just grow and mind their own business. A little sunlight and water is all it takes for it to be alive.
4. Keep A Funky Jewelry Holder

College is where we learn and practice the latest of the fashion trends in our life. We get extremely experimental in terms of our outfits and even more when it comes to accessories. Find a good funky jewelry holder for yourself. They are not expensive at all and you’ll definitely bump into some DIY ones online. Neatly place and arrange your accessories on your dresser or study. It won’t just organize your priced possessions, but it will also amp up your space.
5. Homemade Tapestry Is The Décor Trend Now

For those who aren’t aware of this, a tapestry is a thick fabric that is stuck over a wall. Just like wallpaper. You can definitely find many in the stores near you. But you can also pick an old sheet and either draw or create geometric patterns with some paint and use it. If there’s any wall of your dorm that you don’t like, use a tapestry to cover it. It’s going to add color to your dorm walls.
6. Use Storage Bins Creatively
You’re obviously not going to have enough wardrobe space to fit all your stuff in your dorm. The best way to amp up your storage space is to get storage bins. These are like a boon, literally! You can always make them look interesting by decorating them with cool artistic stuff like paints, colors, lights, or even stickers.
7. Use String Lights
Adding lights to your dorm will give it a very whimsical look, don’t you agree? You can always use your old Christmas lights or lanterns. You can also create patterns on walls with the help of lights. At times, when you don’t really want to switch on the big, irksome, bright lights, you can just switch the string lights on and enjoy the romantic and harmonious vibe of your dorm.
8. Use Floor Cushions For Additional Seating

You obviously cannot afford extra furniture in your tiny dorm to make space for your friends when they come over. We also know that not many us like people plonking themselves on our beds. Hello, OCD! In such cases, buy floor cushions. These are colorful, economic, and don’t occupy much space of your dorm.
Those were some of our favorite ways to decorate a dorm room. We can go on and on with the ideas here though. Do you have any other creative ideas to decorate a dorm in the most feasible way? Let us know in the comments below.
